Rebeca Méndez wins the 2012 Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award, 2012
I am very happy and honored to announce I have been awarded the 13th Annual National Design Award in the category of Communication Design.
The National Design Awards is a program of the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in New York. The program celebrates design in various disciplines as a vital humanistic tool in shaping the world, and seeks to increase national awareness of design by educating the public and promoting excellence, innovation, and lasting achievement.
A jury of design leaders and educators from across the country, convened by the museum, reviewed submissions resulting from thousands of nominations submitted by the general public. Upon receiving the nomination earlier this year, I was asked to submit a portfolio book containing ten of my projects, of which you can see photos above.
First launched at the White House in 2000 as a project of the White House Millennium Council, the National Design Awards were established to promote excellence and innovation in design. First Lady Michelle Obama serves as the Honorary Patron for this year’s National Design Awards, and will host a luncheon at the the White House this fall to celebrate the winners.

Lets have lunch!
Eight of my single channel video artworks are in exhibition at the Hammer Cafe in the courtyard of the Hammer Museum from April 24 through May 30.
The 50-minute program features works captured on 16mm film in Iceland, the Svalbard archipelago in the High Arctic, the Atacama desert in Chile, and White Sands and Death Valley in the United States. The works on display are:
